Plastic-to-oil recycling is a thermal process called pyrolysis that heats mixed, contaminated, hard-to-recycle plastic in the absence of oxygen until it breaks down into a synthetic oil that can be refined into fuels and new feedstock — and it is the conversion technology Corsair Group International uses to give its CSRnow plastic-neutral model a physical, material basis rather than a purely financial one.
The need is structural, not marginal. Global plastics use is projected to nearly triple by 2060 to 1,231 million tonnes a year, according to the OECD’s Global Plastics Outlook, while the UN Environment Programme estimates the equivalent of a garbage truck of plastic enters the ocean every minute. Mechanical recycling — melting and remoulding — only works on clean, sorted, single-type plastic, which is why so little of the total stream is ever recovered.
What pyrolysis actually does
Pyrolysis breaks long plastic polymer chains back into shorter hydrocarbon molecules by heating the waste to roughly 400–500°C in an oxygen-free chamber, so it cannot burn. Instead of combusting, the plastic vaporises and is then condensed into a liquid — a synthetic crude — alongside a smaller fraction of gas and solid char. Corsair Group International’s plants are engineered around this principle, targeting the low-grade, multi-layer and food-contaminated plastics that mechanical recyclers reject.
The output matters as much as the process. The synthetic oil that CSRnow’s plastic-to-oil technology produces can re-enter industry as fuel or as feedstock for new products, which keeps the material in the loop for another cycle rather than releasing it through incineration.
